PREN network infrastructure

The PREN physical network became substantially operational on July 26, 2000. The heart of the PREN metropolitan area network is a Cisco 12000 GSR router connecting OGI, OHSU and PSU through leased OC-3c (155 Mbps) local loop circuits. The PREN router connects to the upstream Internet2 backbone through the UW's P/NWGP, using an OC-12c (622 Mbps) circuit. PREN and P/NWGP maintain a physical presence in a new regional 'carrier hotel' in the Pittock Block building in downtown Portland. See PREN Network Topology map

Each participating PREN institution has made significant improvements and upgrades within their respective campus environments to prepare for Internet 2.

OHSU extended a fully switched network infrastructure over 80% of the campus and is working on upgrading the remainder.

OGI's improvements included the deployment of a gigabit backbone, installation of single mode fiber and added diagnostic capabilities.

PSU's upgrade efforts included a campus-wide upgrade from various 100 Mbps technologies (including FDDI) to a full gigabit ethernet campus connection across multiple campus buildings.
