History of PREN
OHSU, OGI and PSU collaborated to form the Portland Research
and Education Network (PREN) which was Portland's connection to
the national research network Internet2. The $1.2 million project
connected the Portland area institutions to Seattle's Pacific Northwest
Gigapop, the regional conduit for Internet2.
Contributions to Resources for Science and
Technology: PREN was the most ambitious project that OGI,
OHSU and PSU, the three principle research and education institutions in
the Portland metropolitan area, undertook together. The project laid the foundation for additional
significant cooperative infrastructure development activities.
Contributions Beyond Science and
Engineering: The PREN project stimulated the establishment
of a regional 'carrier hotel' in the Pittock Block building in downtown
Portland. This facility was essential for PREN's physical network, housing
routers and switches for both the Internet2 metropolitan area network and
UW's P/NWGP. This greatly facilitated the rational development of IP
service infrastructure serving the community at large.
