NWACC accepts Proposal for MRU - Wireless Network Pilot Project.

Goal

To build and test the MRU Wireless Network

MRU (Multiple Radio Unit) - Wireless Network Pilot Project.

Wireless is having an impact on our faculty, students and administrative processes. Portland State university(PSU) and Oregon health and Science university(OHSU) have a unique oppurtinity to test and demonstrate soon to be released powerful wireless technology - IEEE 802.16 or "WiMAX" This technology promises more bandwidth, more distance and potentially many new applications for all NWACC instrtutions.

The new standards when implememnted will allow for three broad categories of wireless solutions:

  • Long distance Fixed Wireless Access (last mile wireless equivalant of cable,DSL,T1).
  • Wireless network backhaul(High capacity relational links without costly fiber).
  • Nomadic or portable wireless access over very large/remote areas.
The distance range of these solutions is expected to be up to 10km.Bandwidth capability will be upto 70 Mb/s.the technology is expected to become a standard-making it a cost effective generally deployable technology.
